It's time to talk about food again... In Spain they are a bit more omnivorous than in Norway!

I think foreigners might call Norwegian food kind of boring. Although, I must say I am not quite sure what is Norwegian food. All my life my food has been a good mix of food from all over the world and there has never been a lot of “typical Norwegian dishes” on my table.

But still, we are a bit conservative maybe? For instance, fish and seafood is quite big in Norway (as would be expected from a country with a coastline of 25,148 km!) but we don’t have Octopus, cuttlefish, squid and the like, and most people wouldn’t even want to try it if having the opportunity... Same goes for snails. These kinds of foods don’t really exist up in Norway, I think it would be very hard to obtain, thus the strangeness in actually eating this for most Norwegians.

We are also a bit conservative when it comes to what parts of the animal we use in our cooking. We are pretty happy with a fillet of some kind, maybe a cutlet and some minced meat. We are not big on using the ‘other’ parts of the animal. In Spain, they are! 

So, going to a market here in Spain, especially a good one like La Boquería, is quite the adventure for Norwegian me. They sell so many things from animals that I have never even seen before! I have no idea how they prepare all this, and how it’s eaten, but I think I don’t really need to find out either…

I am just observing, taking in the culture, as usual!!

I try to always be open-minded when in a new country. I don't judge. I observe and respect other ways of doing things, and although this is not something I would eat, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with those who would.

But I have to tell a story about how I accidently tried Callos. 
It was a lovely warm night, me and a good friend at a fabulous tapas bar in Poblenou in Barcelona. Lots of tapas were consumed, and lots of wine too. For each glass of delicious Spanish wine we drank, the more daring we became, to the point where we just asked the waiter to bring us something he would recommend from the extensive list of tapas. Out came a plate of something white, wobbly, swimming in some orange sauce. It turned out it was tripe, and lets just say it wasn't for me! The pitfalls of going for tapas in Spain!

  1. We have weird food in Germany too....but maybe not that strange...I am glad I don't eat meat! :)

  2. I'm a wimp when it comes to trying new and daring foods...I don't think Spain is nearly as crazy as some Asian countries! More power to them, but I stay away from that stuff because I have a weak stomach...

    1. I am not the toughest one either although I have tried a couple things here that I never thought I would ever eat (I can count the callos here too right? Even though it was served me by 'accident'?) My stomach is pretty weak as well and I am not the most experimental!

  3. Hmmm, vet ikke helt hva jeg synes om disse "delikatessene"... På en måte er det flott at alle deler av dyret blir utnyttet og ikke er bortkastet. Selv sier jeg ja takk til snegler men nei til griseføtter:-)

  4. Thanks for the visual tour! It's great to embrace new food adventures! While we do not carry stomachs or eyeballs, La Tienda has some unique Spanish delicacies including cuttlefish, octopus, percebes (goose barnacles) and cocochas de bacalao (cod cheeks!)     1. Nice to know there is a way to get Spanish delicacies outside of Spain, although at the moment I have it all on my doorstep! :)

  5. After quite some years in Spain I have managed to adapt to eating every part of the pig and some strange seafoods - in fact I now find my native British food very bland and boring. I will never forget buying my first chicken from a supermarket (now I use a butcher as my Spanish is better) it still had its head on!

  6. Oh my!! The callos sounds like kind of an adventure :/ But I think it's so fascinating you're trying such unique foods, that's what it's all about, getting to experience a new culture. Though.. I might take your word for it and skip that particular 'experience' ;)

  7. All den spennende maten er en av grunnene til at jeg liker å reise i Spania. Har ikke prøvd noe av dette, men var på en gammel, erværdig restaurant i Madrid og smakte et eller anna populært av gris, hva kan nå det ha vært? Husker ikke helt, men det var nydelig godt. Selv om jeg overhodet ikke er noe glad i kjøtt. Men må jo leke seg mest mulig med mat når man er ute og reiser...

    1. Det finnes mye spennende fantastisk god mat i Spania! Og så er det en del ting som er litt mer 'spesielt'... Men man må jo prøve ting, men jeg tror ikke jeg noengang kommer til å teste hjerne eller tunge hvis jeg vet hva jeg får servert!

    irland har i grunnen mye lik mat som norge, saa ikke saa veldig mye spennende aa oppdage i matveien her borte, men oel kan de :)

  9. I'm not very adventurous when it comes to meat. I'm happy to eat all sorts of vegetables but not as daring with meats. But I'm with you in respecting the diets and meals of people in the different places that I visit.
