Snow in Barcelona!

I've been down with the flu for about a week and I didn't choose the best time to do it. See, winter arrived in Barcelona and it's been coooold! According to some who has been in Barcelona for years they haven't experienced such cold weather here ever. It even snowed on thursday morning! Crazy!

It didn't last more than a couple of hours before the sun came out and took over again, but it really snowed! Since I was in bed freezing with fever I didn't run out with my camera to catch the moment on "film" but luckily someone else did:

Last weekend we had normal "winter" temperatures with about 17 degrees in the shadow and twenty-something in the sun, and then boom- the cold wave that hit northern Europe reached all the way down to Spain as well. Back home they are talking about temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees, and I am not talking about positive ones... But I am in Spain after all! It's not supposed to be this cold here!

Yeah yeah, I know, it's all so very stereotypical to think warm sun and blue skies in Spain, and it's somehow fun to experience this completely non-stereotypical Spanish weather, but I've been having this nasty flu and when you have a fever you might struggle to keep warm, which has been my case and this week it's been soo cold everywhere. Outside, inside...

It's not like I am not used to some cold weather, after all I come from Norway. But up there the houses are well prepared for the cold, the windows are double glazed, the walls are well isolated, and (obviously) every house has heaterS. (Note the plural..)

Here that's not the case. When it's windy outside, the curtains move behind the closed windows... not so very tight and insulating windows in other words. And not helping to keep the cold out. And having no heater and no insulation, the cold brick walls make sure to keep the buildings cold when it's cold outside. Last night the outside temperature marked 0.5 degrees!!!!! And the prediction for today is this:

Mañana
Tarde
Noche
Máx.: 5ºC
Mín.: -2ºC
04/02/2012 Buen tiempo durante todo el sábado. Temperaturas sin cambios. Salida:08:00
Puesta:18:11

Really?? Max 5º and min -2º
Its hard believing it though, cause right now the sun is on the temperature marker and it shows 23 degrees...but I guess it's cold in the shadow. I might just stay under the duvet!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

  1. WOW.. I visited my favorite city, Barcelona, couple of times. But I never tried visiting it in such a cold weather. I agree that it's an unusual weather in Barcelona as far as I know.

However, it looks beautiful even when covered in snow.

I hope you get well soon.

    Enjoy

    1. Beautiful but strange! It has been really cold these last few days, and apparently it's not normal at all to be this "wintery". The snow is all gone though, it just lasted those few hours on thursday morning.
Thanks, I am almost well again!

  4. Yikes! I wouldn't know what to do with myself! Charleston is the same way...the slightest bit of snow and the whole city shuts down. We just aren't prepared for that!

  5. hi hope you feel better soon - there is a lot of flu around at the moment. My first years here i found it incredibly cold - much worse than damp but mild Cornwall. And in Barcelona with those draughty windows and cold floors brrrrr! Here in Granollers it was a beautiful day with snow on the distant mountains and bright sunshine in the streets.
amazing how although people don't have houses ready for the cold, they do have winter wardrobes - everyone is out in their hats and gloves and scarves and padded jackets. Keep warm!

    1. Hi Kate, thank you! Haha, you know the draught windows and cold floors of Barcelona. I was never this cold back up in Norway! (Inside that is...) You too, keep warm!

  6. Oh you poor thing, I really hope you feel better soon. Do you have friends there who can bring you soup, a heater(s)!!!...things like that? Your description of the weather made me cold! I'm from the Pacific so I'm not used to that at all! Those photos are beautiful though. Feel better soon lovely <3

    1. Thank you sweetie, I am fine now! This bringing/eating soup when ill is something I've seen in the movies so many times, but never seen in real life?!! We just don't do that in this part of the world, I think. Not up in Norway at least. Sounds very nice however!

  8. Growing up in Florida, our houses were not well insulated or ready for cold weather either. While things don't get very cold their by Northern standards, stucco and weak heaters don't help things either.

PS Gorgeous photo of the falling snow.

    1. The experience was short-lived. It snowed for a couple of hours and then the sun came out and it was all gone. Surrealistic and somehow fun! But I do prefer the normal Spanish weather... The winter was one of the reasons for moving from Norway after all :)
